A hooded eye: That appears a few deep and dark, but it’s not. It’s really an eye health. Some women have brown eyes; some blue. Some people have almond-shaped optics, and others have hooded eyes. Just as you turn the darker shades you’re fighting with based on your eye color, the way you use your eye design depends on eye frame. Since there isn’t a fixed ridge, hooded eye forms act the single request of how and anywhere to add that comment. Enter: Jenn Streicher (whom you may know as one-third of the beauty energy trio known as the Streicher relatives). She gave us the basics and showed us a beautiful soft look for hooded eye frames. Of way, it’s one that not-so-hooded eyes can do too. See for yourself.

Ever start with a hornbook. Streicher says this is especially necessary for hooded eyes because of the skin on the tops spots. Then yourself use a base shade all over the lid. Streicher’s popular base? Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eye Colour ($29). “It does anything that you put over it great; it does that shadow last great,” she says. And of way, as any pro will tell you, mixture, blend, blend before going on to your next color. For this base color, we applied one of the original mattes (yes, matte—we’re just as hot, don’t worry) Caviar Stick Eye Colours, Blossom.

Next becomes the simple yet critical part: building the dream of a fold. This is where Streicher says a lot of women go opposite. “Most people, when they put eye makeup on, class of lift their jaw into the glass, but you don’t need to do that if you have hooded eyes.” (The time she said that everyone in the place nodded in understanding.) Rather, look good ahead. You’re working to build something that’s not there, so you want to look right in the reflector in order to place the color accurately where you need it—where you would see a ridge. So for hooded eyes, this is somewhat powerful than you might view with other eye shapes—just above that turn where the roofs meet.

Jenn’s another key tip is to begin light: “Most trace it,” she tells us. (You can also start with a small shade.) That way you can see you’ve got the situation right; then increase the color and blend it out (with a back and forward movement). Keep most of the color near the outer eye, “like taking the color out from the center if you’re watching from the center of your eye,” says Streicher.

And now a simple step: Add a light-colored shimmery color to brow ossein. Choose something subtle like the Rosegold Caviar Stick Eye Colour ($29) we worked here. “You don’t want to take it the hair too far because you’re working to build that fold, and you want it to be super subtle,” Streicher notes. And, of way, not to sound like a cracked account, but make sure to mix. “You don’t want to see where a value ends and different begins; it should all be a lot of blending,” the makeup expert guides.

Fold appearance was directed on the outer edge. Now it’s time to lighten up the inside edge with a bright shade. Take that same light-colored shimmer (for us, that’s Rosegold), and use it to the inside edges. This not only frees up the eyes but also helps extend their appearance.

If you want to hit up the meaning, bump up the difference with an ultra-thin line of dark eyeliner reaching all the way into the inside edge. (Streicher suggests using Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Tuxedo, $29 with a little eyeliner cover.) This may sound counter to what you’d believe would open up hooded eyes, but that brighter color with a thin dark line forms that contrast. As Streicher says, “Nobody has hooded eyes up his or her private corner, so that’s where you’re actually noticing definition.”

It is the start that Streicher remarks are necessary, and it’s apparently one you’re hopping: Add color to the under a lid. “The back lid is a mainly great tool because it produces contour,” Streicher says. Just like with the fold color, let the lower lid color taper off as you near the inside edge.

Lastly, total mascara. We like Laura Mercier’s Extra Lash Sculpting Mascara ($26). And don’t be scared to add mascara to the below beats too. Or for special events, Streicher suggests adding a few different false eyelashes to the outer edges to up the eyes even more and add an added oomph.

Final plans for hooded eyes and all eye shapes: Layer your darknesses, and blend, blend, blend.
